FAQ

Question 1

Do I need to know what I want before I contact you?

Accepted Answer

No. Most people come to us with a feeling rather than a spec sheet: the house should feel calmer, the lights should just be right, the movie room should sound like a cinema. That is enough. We start with a conversation about how you live and work, then translate it into a system. If you already have a wish list, even better. Either way, the first step is the same: book a consultation .

Question 2

What happens in a consultation?

Accepted Answer

A short call or a walk through your space with one of our specialists. We look at the rooms, listen to what matters most, and talk honestly about priorities and budget. You leave with a clear picture of what is possible and what it would take. There is no obligation and no hard sell. Replies to new requests go out within one business day.

Question 3

Which areas do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We design, install and service across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, including Allen, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Prosper, Fairview, Lucas, Dallas, Highland Park, University Park and Preston Hollow. Our showroom is in Allen, TX. For larger residential and commercial projects we regularly travel beyond that core area. Ask us.

Question 4

Can you work with a home that is already built?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A large share of our work is retrofit. Wireless lighting control, battery-powered shades, discreet speakers and a properly designed network can transform an existing home with minimal disruption and no need to open every wall. We assess what is already in place, reuse what is good and add only what is needed. Read more about the trade-offs in new build vs retrofit on the blog.

Question 5

How much does a smart home system cost?

Accepted Answer

It depends on scope, and we would rather give you a real number than a vague one. A single-room theater, a whole-home lighting system and a full automation platform are very different projects, and each can be phased over time. In the consultation we map your priorities and give you a transparent proposal, so you know exactly where the investment goes and what can wait for a later phase.

Question 6

Which parts of Dallas-Fort Worth do you work in, and does it change the project?

Accepted Answer

Most of our residential work sits in two very different corridors. North of Dallas, in Allen, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Prosper and Celina, the story is new construction: large custom homes and master-planned communities where we can plan the technology before the drywall goes up. In the Park Cities and Preston Hollow it is mostly established estates, where the craft is fitting a modern system into a home that deserves to look untouched. Same team, same standards, different playbook. We tailor the approach to the house in front of us.

Question 7

Which home styles are popular in North Texas right now?

Accepted Answer

Modern farmhouse and transitional still lead in the northern suburbs, with clean contemporary and warm modern homes gaining ground in Frisco, Prosper and Preston Hollow. Traditional, Mediterranean and Tudor-inspired estates remain the signature of Highland Park and University Park. Style shapes the system more than people expect. Black steel windows and walls of glass call for motorized shades and glare control. Open floor plans want zoned audio that follows you from kitchen to patio. Minimal interiors want invisible speakers, keypads in matching finishes and no visible equipment at all.

Question 8

I am building a new home in Frisco, Prosper or Celina. When should I involve you?

Accepted Answer

As early as possible, ideally while the plans are being finalized. The cheapest moment to future-proof a home is before the drywall, when conduit, wiring and equipment locations cost very little to add. In fast-growing communities where builders move on tight schedules, we coordinate directly with your builder so prewire happens at rough-in and nothing waits on us. Read more in new build vs retrofit .

Question 9

Do you work on older estates in Highland Park, University Park and Preston Hollow?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. Plaster walls, original millwork and formal rooms need a lighter touch: wireless lighting control, discreet in-ceiling audio, shades integrated into existing window treatments and a network that reaches every corner without visible cabling. The goal is a home that feels exactly as it did, only easier to live in.

Question 10

How do Texas summers shape a smart home design?

Accepted Answer

Heat and glare drive a lot of decisions. Automated shades that track the sun keep rooms comfortable and protect furnishings. Climate integration lets the house pre-cool before you arrive and ease off when nobody is home. Outdoor spaces come alive after sunset, so we design landscape lighting and outdoor audio for the evening hours you actually use. We also plan equipment locations carefully. Electronics in a Texas attic do not last, so racks go in conditioned, ventilated spaces.

Question 11

Do you design outdoor living spaces, pools and patios?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Outdoor living is a big part of North Texas homes and we treat it as a room of its own: weather-rated TVs, landscape speakers for even sound without bothering the neighbors, layered lighting for the pool, patio and pathways, and control of pool and spa features from the same app as the rest of the house. See our guide to outdoor spaces that survive Texas summers .

Question 12

Are you a local company, and can I visit a showroom?

Accepted Answer

Yes. WH Technologies is based in Allen, Texas, with a showroom at 450 Century Pkwy, Suite 250. Our team lives and works across Dallas-Fort Worth, so support is local too. The best way to see the systems is to book a visit, so we can set up what you want to experience. Book a time or call +1 972-521-1208.

Question 13

How long does a project take?

Accepted Answer

A focused upgrade like lighting control or a media room can be done in days. Whole-home systems in new construction follow the build: prewire at rough-in, equipment at trim-out, then programming and tuning once the home is finished. We give you a schedule at proposal stage and coordinate it with your builder, architect or facilities team so nothing waits on us.

Question 14

Do you work with builders and architects?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and we prefer to join early. As an HTA certified design partner we sit at the design table, plan infrastructure before drywall and keep technology invisible in the finished space. Builders get a wired-in, on-schedule partner; architects get integration that respects the design. See Partnership for how we work with the trades.

Question 15

Which brands do you install?

Accepted Answer

We build on platforms we are certified in and trust to last, including Savant for whole-home control and Lutron for lighting and shades, alongside a curated set of partner brands for audio, video, networking and security. We choose based on fit for your project, not on what is easiest to sell. Our certifications are listed on the home page .

Question 16

Will everything work together in one app?

Accepted Answer

That is the whole point. Lighting, shades, climate, audio, video, security and more run on one control platform, so you get one app, one remote and keypads that make sense, instead of a drawer full of remotes and six different apps. We program scenes around your routines, like "Good morning", "Movie" or "Away", so daily life is one touch.

Question 17

What is human-centric or tunable lighting?

Accepted Answer

Lighting that changes color temperature and intensity through the day, crisp and bright when you need focus, warm and soft in the evening. It supports natural rhythms and simply makes a home feel better after dark. We design the layers, the fixtures and the control so it happens automatically. Our lighting design guide explains what a real lighting plan involves.

Question 18

Can motorized shades be added to existing windows?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Battery-powered and wired options fit most existing windows, with fabrics chosen for privacy, glare control and the look of the room. Shades can follow the sun, close for a movie or drop at bedtime, all automatically.

Question 19

Can I keep normal light switches?

Accepted Answer

You can, and many clients do in secondary rooms. In the spaces you use most we typically replace banks of switches with clean keypads that call up scenes, so one button sets the whole room. Physical control always remains; the app is an addition, never a requirement.

Question 20

What is the difference between a home theater and a media room?

Accepted Answer

A dedicated theater is a purpose-built room: controlled light, acoustic treatment, tiered seating and a projection or large-format display tuned for film. A media room is a living space that doubles as a great place to watch and listen, with discreet speakers and a display that fits the decor. Both can be exceptional. We help you decide which suits the space and how you actually use it.

Question 21

Can I have music in every room without visible speakers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In-ceiling and in-wall speakers, and even fully invisible speakers that are plastered over, deliver whole-home audio without a single visible grille. Each room becomes a zone you can play together or independently.

Question 22

Will outdoor audio disturb the neighbors?

Accepted Answer

Not when it is designed properly. Instead of two loud speakers on the wall, we use several landscape speakers spread through the space, so coverage is even at a lower volume and sound stays in your yard. It sounds effortless everywhere. More in our outdoor audio article .

Question 23

Why does a smart home need a professional network?

Accepted Answer

Because every device, from lights to cameras to the TV, depends on it. Wi-Fi dead zones, dropped devices and slow streaming almost always trace back to a consumer router doing a job it was never built for. We design enterprise-grade networks with full Wi-Fi coverage, wired backbones where it matters and secure remote access, so the system just works. Read why your smart home is only as good as its network .

Question 24

Who can see my camera footage?

Accepted Answer

You. We design surveillance so the footage is yours, with local recording and privacy-conscious placement, and we walk you through exactly who has access and how. Cameras go where they add real security, never where they intrude.

Question 25

Can I control everything when I am away?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Secure remote access lets you check cameras, adjust lights and climate, lock doors or set the house to "Away" from anywhere. We set it up properly, on a network built for it, so remote control is convenient and safe.

Question 26

What kinds of commercial spaces do you work on?

Accepted Answer

Offices and boardrooms, restaurants and hospitality, retail, showrooms, worship spaces and multi-family amenity areas, among others. Lighting, distributed audio, video walls, conference systems, surveillance and networking, designed to be reliable and easy for staff to use. See our projects for recent commercial work.

Question 27

Can a conference room really be one-touch?

Accepted Answer

It should be. One press starts the meeting: display on, correct input, lights and shades set, call connected. No cable hunting, no IT ticket. We design boardrooms and huddle rooms so anyone can walk in and present in seconds.

Question 28

Do you handle video walls and digital signage?

Accepted Answer

Yes, from single large-format displays to multi-panel video walls, with the content management and control behind them. We handle mounting, structure, cabling and calibration so the result looks seamless and stays that way.

Question 29

What happens after installation?

Accepted Answer

We walk you through the system, train everyone who will use it and leave clear documentation. Then we stay available. Support plans keep the system monitored, updated and running, so it performs the way it did on day one. See how we support our clients .

Question 30

What if something stops working?

Accepted Answer

Call or message us. Many issues can be resolved remotely, often before you notice them. When a visit is needed, a technician who knows your system comes out. We stand behind every system long after installation is complete.

Question 31

Can you take over a system installed by someone else?

Accepted Answer

Usually, yes. We start with an assessment of what is installed, what works and what does not, then give you honest options: repair, upgrade in phases or rebuild. Many of our long-term clients came to us this way.
